When I spoke to Yalumba’s chief winemaker Louisa Rose earlier in the year she mentioned that Viognier had a rough time of it in South Australia during the 2011 vintage. Looking at this, you wouldn’t know it.
Pronounced quince, lychee and white flower aromas with dried apricots playing second fiddle. It is syrupy on entry but it freshens up as it narrows down the line. There’s an ever-present creamed honey softness that doesn’t hamper the wine’s composure. Ginger spice and trace nut-shell bitterness see it out. It’s rich and dense and complex. Great to see at this price point. Good
