2010 Chapel Hill Gorge Block Chardonnay

“You can see that, as Australia’s most harvested grape, there’s chardonnay growing just about anywhere there are vines. Now that I think about it, I am still scarred by having to judge the chardonnay class at the McLaren Vale wine show a few years back” - Nick Stock, Gourmet Traveller Wine: October/November 2011

Not an easy sell is the ol’ McLaren Vale Chardie. Maybe that’s for good reason, I’m not sure. The thing is Chapel Hill’s Gorge Block, nestled at the northern end of the 15 hectare Winery vineyard, seems eminently suited to the variety. I haven’t yet visited  this McClackers marvel but when I do get the chance I won’t just be taking a close look at the Cabernet.

Following on from last year’s strong release, this centres around all things lemon – zest, pith and flesh – with stone fruits rounding out the palate. Winemaker inputs are bang on. Gentle spice from the oak, savoury character and textural nuance from battonage. Sapid but structured and down right delicious. Very Good
