Canberra 13.5% Screwcap $25
I had a few stylistic concerns with the last vintage of this wine but they have gone a ways towards being alleviated this time round. The 2010 is more varietally satisfying.
Red cherries, raspberries, chalk, dried flowers and almonds. A sour savoury palate with the acidity assimilating nicely. Quite fleshy in the mouth and there’s ample chewy, furry tannin. Not an overly complex wine but I don’t think Australian Sangiovese always requires complexity. It’s very food friendly and a welcome alternative to sweeter fruited reds.
Having said that, it has neither the depth nor the drive to match its King Valley, Heathcote and McLaren Vale contemporaries just yet. It is a step in the right direction though. A solid wine.
