Grampians 14.5% Screwcap $30
The 2008 release of the Cliff Edge Shiraz sees some changes to the wine, the least important of which is the label; the new one resembles that which adorns the flagship Langi Shiraz. In a way, though, that sums up what’s happening here.
Now made entirely with estate grown fruit from the eastern granite slopes of Mount Langi Ghiran, employing open top fermentation and pigeage (hand/foot plunging) along with the inclusion of 40% whole bunches, the Cliff Edge Shiraz is beginning to exhibit a strong family resemblance to its esteemed elder sibling…or Father, if you consider that the vines began as cuttings from the Langi Old Block.
Smells of plum and blackberry leaning into mulberry, spice and sandalwood, florals and fleeting red high-tones with a hint of small goods underneath. Vital and fresh fruited, proof positive of the worth of selective hand-picking, especially in a vintage that had to deal with a heatwave. Pepper, clove and cinnamon are all in sync on the palate, which offers a medium-bodied caress. Satin smooth with impeccably balanced French oak input and fine-boned tannins which stretch out like a reclining muse – totally relaxed but always maintaining immaculate form. A refreshing mineral laden finish.
Showed at its best on the second and third day of tasting, although the quality was apparent from opening. Will certainly be better in a few years but also possesses the structural integrity to deserve a place in the cellar. Very Good – Excellent
