2009 Taylors Estate Tempranillo

Clare Valley 13.5% Screwcap $18.95

You begin to wonder how long Tempranillo will remain in the ‘alternative variety’ category when Taylors include a version in their Estate range. Not that I’m complaining of course. I think it’s rather a good thing and I believe the market is ready for it.

The flavours here seem varietal enough to me – at least within an Australian context. Black and red fruits in equal measure, tamarind & cinnamon, sarsaparilla and tomato based BBQ sauce. Soft in the mouth with tiny ripples of acidity and smudged brush strokes of tannin. A pleasing savoury/sour background with the odd splash of sweeter fruit up close.

The low level of acidity may not be to everyone’s taste but, having spoken to several producers of Tempranillo, that’s an issue which often confronts the grape.

It’s a pretty solid first effort from Taylors. A bit more persistence and conviction is needed but the building blocks are there. Ready to drink now.
