Canberra 13.5% Screwcap $25
A great example of an approachable young Merlot that’s not just plummy and dumb. Yes, there’s juicy, fresh red and black forest berry fruit but some olive tapenade gives the wine a lovely, savoury edge.
Chocolate shavings, spice and mint chip in too, whilst mild, nutty tannins see out a medium bodied wine that is balanced, delicious and very food friendly. There are a lot of similarities to the 2008 release but it’s a superior wine.
Winemaker Andrew McEwin shows a deft touch with this variety, and its synergy with the Canberra district is impossible to deny. It’s not a show pony, nor does it require a long and florid note to describe it. It’s just a very good wine and great value to boot.
