2006 Linfield Road Edmund Major Old Vines Reserve Shiraz

Barossa 14.9% Screwcap $65

A curious wine in many ways. Far lighter in colour and weight than I would have expected from 100 year old vines in the Barossa; but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s developing well with ample structure and aged complexity just starting to creep into the picture. For the tech heads, it saw 24 months in French oak barrels and it has made the most of that time.

Redcurrants, blackberries, ironstone, liquorice and cocoa with a suggestion of tomato soup. Quite juicy with grainy, oak dominant tannin. There’s good sweet/savoury interplay on the palate with a delicious touch of wildness surfacing on the third day of tasting.

The whole package doesn’t lack complexity and its individuality is intriguing. In another 5-10 years this may well turn out to be full of pleasant surprises.
