Italy 11.5% Crown Seal $35
Dave Brookes wrote this wine up at his most excellent blog, vinofreakism, and its snappy labeling jumped out at me when I visited the Wine Experience store in Brisbane. It read well, so I thought I’d buy a bottle and see how it drank.
It’s cloudy and completely foreign to my palate as a Prosecco or any other wine for that matter. An interesting question arises here. Was my (extremely) positive reaction to this bottle a result of its difference (something I valorise in vinous matters) or its quality? Whilst I don’t think I can answer that properly in this post, I can say that I have tasted a few wines that have seemed foreign to me over the last year or so and many of them didn’t see me coming back for another glass. I polished off this bottle over the course of an afternoon and an evening…that does count for something.
The nose is fascinating. Florals, pear cider, apples and a general sort of yeastiness. The palate adds apricot kernels, and a fair amount of pithy grip on a finish of pleasantly bitter and refreshing grapefruit. It’s an über dry and mostly savoury style and really does call for regular top ups.
If this sounds intriguing, take a look at the vinofreakism review. There’s a lot more geographical, technical and social information contained within it…and a better image which shows off a stubby bottle – as attractive to me as the label design.
