2010 Yalumba Y Series Pinot Grigio

South Australia 13.0% Screwcap $14.95

As opposed to the last wine reviewed, this is in fact a Pinot Gris. So say I. It’s about riper, fuller varietal fruit and a softer mouth feel. What’s more, it’s a jolly good Pinot Gris at an excellent price.

A bouquet of poached fruit, brown pear, honeysuckle and jasmine flower, mandarins and ground sweet/warm spice translates precisely to an impressive palate. Plenty of upfront flavour and textural lychee-like slipperiness but acidity is nestled in snugly, providing form and shape to the progression of flavours.

It tapers smoothly into spice, a sprinkle of demerara sugar, some slight grapey-ness and gentle phenolics, avoiding excess greasiness at every point. A little more penetration and endurance would see me raving about this but it’s an excellent example of a maligned variety. Kudos.
