2009 Wirra Wirra Church Block Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz Merlot

McLaren Vale 14.5% Screwcap $22

It makes me happy to see wines that are at the coal face of retail sales perform as well as the 2009 version of this well known blend. I cut my teeth on this wine and I know I’m not the only one…

For trainspotters, it’s 51% Cabernet, 29% Shiraz, 20% Merlot. More importantly it’s a bloody good drink; full of blackcurrants and blueberries accompanied by roast chestnuts and some pouch tobacco. Mocha shake oak contributes positively and is well pitched. It’s spry and the acidity moves beautifully into satisfying, grainy tannin. The finish takes a slightly more savoury direction with some pleasing spicy highlights.

Dan Murphy’s currently has this for $14.60 a bottle ($13.90 in a six bottle buy, and I would be more than happy to have six bottles of this lying around). Having said that, it’s of high enough quality to snap up at full tote. It made me smile.
