2009 Vasse Felix Chardonnay

Margaret River 13.0% Screwcap $27

I can’t say that this is a wine which imbued me with any real fondness. At $27 I think there are a lot of better places to look.

The bouquet is of bread, lemon curd and grapefruit with the lightest sprinkle of fresh green herbs. The palate is where the problems arise and most of them revolve around oak. Hard oak to be precise…maybe a little creamy at times but presenting, overall, as unyielding…an obstacle to the fruit. There’s a serious thread of acidity, some banana and peach tropicals on the mid-palate and a spicy finish containing apple skin and citrus. And then there is a hard woody aftertaste.

I rate the Vasse Felix winery highly but this effort lacked balance. Too clumsy for mine.
