2009 Flaxman The Stranger Shiraz Cabernet

Barossa, Eden Valley 14% Screwcap $35

A very nice wine this one. Intelligent multi-regional blending, which I’m always happy to see. I recognise the importance of concentrating on establishing our regional/site specific heroes overseas to counteract ignorant wine commentators and their representations of Australian wine but I categorically reject the idea that blending across regions/vineyards is a “20th century approach“. For the record, my views align closely with those expressed by Brian Walsh at last year’s Landmark Australia Tutorial. That speech can be found here

The Stranger is a blend of 70% Barossa Shiraz and 30% Eden Valley Cabernet. Plenty of oak again, this time American and French. Blackberry and raspberry, spice, rich chocolate, creamy vanilla and a little char and tar. Plenty of lushness up front but the structure comes via the Eden Cabernet which also adds some savoury leafy, olive flavours. There’s a lick of liquorice too.

Yes, it needs a little more time but the balance is there. I’d take this every time over its more expensive sibling made entirely from Eden Valley fruit.
