2007 Tesch Karthauser Riesling Spatlese Trocken

Nahe, Germany 12.0% Screwcap $29.99

I had this late last year but only just found my note. It’s a wine that stuck in my head because it was extremely foreign to my palate. That sense of strangeness can be one of the most captivating and enjoyable aspects of wine. Why you would want to diminish the chances of experiencing it, I have no idea…

It’s dry (Trocken designating a maximum rs of 9g/l) and driven by minerality above all things. The back palate is almost entirely wet slate, making the wine devastatingly refreshing. Having said that, there is expressiveness leading up to that; mostly lemons, herbs and some orange oil as it opens up. The entry provides a slight impression of sherbet sweetness but beyond that it is the precision and crystalline nature of the liquid that provides the thrills.

Aromas of honeysuckle, lavender and little camphor add to the overall interest but these seem largely disjointed from the flavour profile in the mouth. I don’t see that as a negative, rather it enhances the fascination I derived from the wine.
