2010 Flaxman Eden Valley Riesling

Eden Valley 12.0% Screwcap $25 Source: Sample

The Flaxman Eden Valley Riesling is sourced from both 45 and 80 year old vines with the fruit being hand picked. Interesting to see the IRF dryness/sweetness scale used on the bottle too. With the growing diversity of Australian Riesling I think it’s an excellent idea. It has the potential to curtail consumer confusion and allow education about the classic dry Australian Riesling style to continue. This wine is very much in that classic, dry mold and that’s indicated clearly by the IRF reading on the back label.

Having said that, it is very approachable in its youth. The bouquet is open and expressive with bright lime and citrus blossom aromas dominating. There’s some spice in the mouth, perhaps a sprig of thyme too. As it moves through its line it develops a steely focus. Another very enjoyable Riesling from what’s proving to be a superb vintage for the variety in the Eden Valley.
