2008 Mayfield Vineyard Riesling

Orange 12.5% Screwcap $28 Source: Sample

Of the three Rieslings I opened at once on Friday, this was the one I chose to drink at the end of the tasting. That doesn’t mean it was the best but it does mean something…

A really fascinating wine, with a fair bit of development already apparent. That developed character doesn’t come across as blunt though. It won’t be an extremely long lived wine but it’s full of flavour and character, plus the structure and vibrance provide more than ample pleasure right now. Curious.

There’s a savoury sort of aspect going on here but it’s not that leesy related effect. Hard to describe. The citrus flavours veer towards orange and mandarin over both lime and grapefruit. The presence of orange rind is clear. Floral with some dried lavender, soap and herbs too. If that sounds off-putting, trust me, it isn’t it. I really enjoyed it and the bottle emptied rather quickly once I started sharing it with a friend.

A truly individual wine that offered an experience that I was grateful for.
