2009 Whicher Ridge Sauvignon Blanc

Geographe 12.9% Screwcap $22 Source: Sample

Cracking wine this. Made with intelligence and precision, with the quality of the grapes standing tall. Put all of your biases against Sauvignon Blanc aside and enjoy it.

I’ve written in my notes “texture, texture, Texture!”, so I suppose it’s textural…a word that is certainly in the running for “most over-used wine descriptor” this year. But it’s an important feature of the wine, so what are you gonna do? For the record, 20% was fermented in 1 and 2 year old French barrels and it saw lees work for 12 months. Nothing new there except, in this case, it balances beautifully with the fruit profile and it really does lift the wine to another level.

Aromas of unripe peach and fresh lemon drift from the glass. It smells deliciously nutty too. Quite a ride on the palate which effortlessly moves from crunchy bite on entry to smooth, soft caress and back to crispness on the finish. My what a finish it is too. I’ve gotten used to Sauvignon Blanc lacking in the back palate area, but no such problem here. It just goes on and on with complex fruits paired with barstool pretzels and assorted nuts. There’s nary a herb in sight (well maybe one, but it’s far from herbaceous).

Quite possibly the best Savvy I’ve tasted this year.

sounds delicious. Like the label too. I wonder if it could have a touch of semillon in there?
