2009 Eldridge Estate Gamay

Mornington Peninsula 13.7% Screwcap $35 Source: Sample

I looked at this yesterday and again this morning. My impressions didn’t change. It’s a lovely wine that drinks superbly. It’s not a show off and it’s all the better for it.

A meaty nose with red and black cherries, forest berries and spice. Just a little earthiness and a suggestion of animal hide. The palate is light to medium bodied, juicy and fresh with fruit flavours and bright, balanced acidity. Finishes with sappy/stalky tannin, some tart plum skins and pepper. Good reach too.

The highest praise I can give this wine is that it has finally gotten me interested and a little excited about Gamay as a variety. It was sheer pleasure I experienced last night when consuming this alongside some BBQ spatchcock prepared with a Portuguese rub. It works well with a light chill too. Especially good news with a long summer ahead.
