2009 Brown Brothers Pinot Grigio

King Valley 12.5% Screwcap $12.90 Source: Retail

The Dan Murphy tasting panel gave this 90 points. I suspect James Suckling would be more like; “I’m 86 on that!”. That would probably be the only thing Suckling and I could agree on. Not that I score wine. Indeed, I’m even less inclined to now.

Pear, lemon, wax and honeysuckle. There’s a suggestion of warm spice and some brine on the palate as well. Ok length. The problem lies in the lack of vitality, zest, acidity and minerality. You could call it textured but I’d just call it flat and blurry. Not a bad wine and it will hardly cost you the earth but it doesn’t possess the qualities I’m after in a Grigio. We’re onto the 2010 now. I would personally hope that the new release sees a new stylistic direction. This just did not do anything for me personally.

Buy some if you like the Grigio flavour spectrum (although many would ask, “what flavour spectrum?”) but want a very soft mouth feel. I prefer more cut and thrust.
