2006 Quarry Hill Spakling Shiraz

Canberra 14.5% Zork $20? Source: Sample

I got rather excited when I was tasting this. I was even more excited when I heard that it is likely to be around the $20 mark when it is released. Simply put, it’s the sort of cool climate Sparkling Shiraz that I love; multi-faceted, sensible dosage (5.9g/l), superb depth and a strong, dry finish of great conviction.

The aromas are enthralling; leather, mushrooms, blackberry, medicinal cherry, damp earth and tar with a some mint lift. Gorgeous mouth feel with soft, fine tannin on the palate drying up the well of fruit sweetness apparent on entry. Pepper and brown spice add an extra dimension. It possesses ample richness but it’s sculpted, allowing the focus to be firmly placed on the layered nature of the wine.

With four years bottle age it’s already packed with complexity but I’d hazard a guess there’s more in store over the mid-term at least. This seriously over-delivers in every way. I look forward to its release with something akin to greedy anticipation.
