Tasmania 12.5% Cork $40 Source: Retail
Jansz’s Premium Vintage Cuvée is always powerful wine & the 2005 is no exception. Five years on lees, 40% barrel fermented, 51% Chardonnay, 49% Pinot Noir - it’s a flamboyant, rich and layered style.
Ripe strawberries, apples extending to peach, citrus and lemon sponge, hazelnuts, cherry pie & brioche. The wine possesses a sensual, creamy mouth feel which is well matched to the richer fruit flavours and the emphasised autolysis characters. It actually gains definition through its line, finishing tighter with saline/oyster shell notes and toasted nuts. That tapering is a positive, as the entry does push the envelope of sweetness. In fact, if I was to be hypercritical I would prefer slightly less dosage. But hey, it’s the Mae West of Tasmanian bubbles. It has its own definition of style and sex appeal.
For the record, I thought this was even better than the 2004 version, perhaps highlighting the excellence of the 2005 vintage.
