2010 Windowrie Family Reserve Sparkling

Orange 11.0% Cork $25 Source: Sample

The Cowra based winery makes this wine entirely from Chardonnay sourced from Orange, a grape with which the region has already had proven success. Its altitude and climate suggests that it may be able to provide good fruit for sparkling wines too. This is an enjoyable wine, although ultimately it lacks the depth, length and complexity to compete with some of the better styles at its price point.

A pale straw colour with a good, fine vigorous bead providing a fluffy and pleasant feel. The bouquet is mostly green apples, melons and danish with a little citrus and lemon blossom. Quite pretty actually. It’s on the sweeter side although tart green apple skins provide good interplay along with non-aggressive but prominent acidity.

Fruit driven fun with a some light and shade, but ultimately a little short and simple. Having said that, I’d expect it should fly out the cellar door on a hot Cowra day.
