Grampians, Yarra Valley 12.5% Screwcap $18.50 Source: Sample
There’s a variety of grapes in this one. The Riesling component is from the Westgate Vineyard in the Grampians. Gewürztraminer, Savagnin and Viognier are all sourced from the Yarra Valley. Barrel feremented with 6 months on lees. I love this sort of cowboy wine blending when it comes off. And this comes off big time.
There’s a little spritz in the glass. Smells of rose petals, limes, lychees, honeysuckle, fresh apricots and kernels and bath salts with a suggestion of marmalade. The palate echoes all of that whilst adding ginger bread and spice on the finish.
I love the complexity of textures here too. The entry is a touch slippery but it changes tack from there, with some linear acidity, before ending on an curious combination of leesy softness and crisper minerality. There will be a 2010 of this and for that I am grateful.
