2006 Zema Cluny Cabernet Merlot

Coonawarra 14.0% Screwcap $25 Source: Sample

A rustic wine. Very, very rustic. Needs the right food and then it’s ok. 60% Cabernet, 25% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and the rest Malbec.

Violets and raspberry jam with briary red fruits, plums (in a pudding sense) and kalamata olives. Sweet choc/vanilla oak is evident but, by and large, it is subsumed by ironstone on the nose and palate. There’s ample curranty red fruit on entry and it swells a bit on the mid-palate with jam but falls away on the finish, which is savoury with bitter dried herbs and rusty tannin.

At four years of age, some old leather notes are beginning to appear – nothing out of place in dusty wine such as this. It has to be your sort of thing I think. Not so much up my alley.
