2005 Cirillo 1850 Old Vine Grenache

Barossa 16.0% Screwcap $50 Source: Sample

Still have a couple of Cirillo wines to get up on the site, so I’ll do one this arvo. Firstly, let me say that this is my least favourite of the 1850 Old Vine Grenaches to drink at the moment. It’s still awesome, but for now, it is a touch sweet for my tastes & there are some redskin lollies on the nose…not on the palate though.

Time may change all of that. Indeed, this bottle just would not die. It got better and better for 5 days before I gave the rest away. And it got more savoury too. In 15 years it might make me look rather silly.

Sweet raspberries and red currants are joined by darker fruits here. Brown spices too. With time it became more earthen and primal but remained remarkably pure. The silkiest of textures, well structured by acid & with a little marzipan just to change things up. I have a bottle left and will attempt to procure more. These wines just fascinate me and the 05 is only beginning what should be a very rewarding journey. I’d like to check in on it often over the next couple of decades.
