2010 Golding The Local Sauvignon Blanc

Adelaide Hills 13.5% Screwcap $20 Source: Sample

I quite like Sauvignon Blanc…with food. It’s very versatile you know. When I attempt to look at it “objectively” it so often falls over on the back palate, lacking any real length. But length, like size, isn’t everything. It’s also worth noting that when I taste a Savy, I tend to compare it to Marlborough’s ubiquitous interpretation. It’s no mean feat that Marly has become a benchmark when it comes to the grape – I mean, the variety originated in the Loire Valley, and the wine world loves to fawn over everything French.

The quality of the fruit in this Golding wine is again impeccable. I’m glad they are bottling wine under their name and not just selling it to the bigger players. Clearly, they have some wonderful vineyards. Fruit intensity is superb. A tropical fruit nose but without the pungency of its New Zealand counterpart. There’s some varietal cut grass with a smattering of herbs too. Wet river pebbles are most welcome.

A softer texture in the mouth is notable though vivid acidity cuts through it to make its full presence known on a tart, crisp finish. It’s mostly about sheer linear intensity, but there is a little texture via some skin contact and a finish that is both pithy and chalky. Basically the wine plays a straight bat, and the grapes are good enough to pull it off. Yes, it doesn’t have a lot of length or great complexity. All the more reason to applaud the impact it still carries.
