2005 Kooyong Haven Pinot Noir

Mornington Peninsula 13.5% Diam $50-60 Source: Cellar

Remarkably different to the Ferrous from the same year, although I believe it’s vinified in pretty much the same way. The Haven vineyard is sheltered by trees, and it seems fitting that the wine is softer, more approachable and more inviting as a result.

Still has a fresh nose of dark cherries and plum with a little strawberry lifting the bouquet. Bottle development sees the forest floor heading in the direction of mulch along with a more pronounced mushroom character. It’s between velvet and silk in the mouth with very good fruit intensity backed up by an excellent tannin structure and a mineral spine. Brown spice and star anise work superbly on exit.

The oak is once again there for all to see, but it’s not over the top and it adds a touch of chocolate richness to affairs. A really lovely wine all up. In its groove now but not about to fall over in the next two years.

Good to hear you've been drinking some excellent wines. Never tried the 05 Haven but do have a couple of the 06. Not sure when I'll crack one open. Maybe sooner rather than later?

Certainly have Dave, although seriously in need of a detox now :)

I have enjoyed an 06 but sadly, no notes. Personally, I'd take a look at a bottle in the next year and make a call on the other based on that. I doubt there's a great rush, but 4-5 years might be the right time to check in on it.

Yep, pretty much what I was thinking. Will open one some stage this year and let you know. Cheers
