2003 Bindi Extended Lees Aged Chardonnay Pinot Noir

Macedon 12% Diam $38.70 Source: Retail

Sourced from fruit grown on the slowest ripening slopes of the original Bindi vineyard, then sentenced to five long years on lees. Disgorged in 2009.

It smells like a Macedon;  a full throttle nose of marzipan, citrus, and Vegemite. Lemons and cut green apples on entry, sweeter, creamier marzipan mid palate with red fruits, nuts and grapefruit seeing out the show quite magnificently. It’s rich (as I believe Macedons should be) but it maintains a linear quality that sets it apart from most sparkling wines made in the region. That Vegemite really lingers, god bless it.

Cracking stuff at a more than decent price with an intriguing earthy note I’d not tasted before in such a wine. It’s not Champagne, it’s Macedon but with just a little more finesse than usual.

I've never had this wine but I've always wanted to. I saw this same 2003 ONCE on a restaurant wine list (Victory Hotel @ Sellicks Beach, perhaps Adelaide's biggest and best wine list) so went to the bar and ordered one. Sadly, they were all out. Damn you not up to date wine lists! Get my hopes up would ya! ;)

Best way of getting this sort of stuff in Brisbane is to shop at independents that are next door to jointly owned bar/restaurants. Now the Victory Hotel is a place I would seriously like to visit!

Bit different to our Victory hey Jeremy…

where did you pick it up in Brisbane?

  4. Jeremy Pringle says:

Tim – Cru Cellars. They do a pretty good job at most wine related things. Staff are good, range of wines changes regularly. It's a fun place to shop on a whim. Prices are good if you buy 4 bottles or more (which is easy to do).
