Radford Eden Valley Fortified Riesling NV

Eden Valley 16.5% Screwcap $ 35 Source: Sample

Sound weird? Well, it works and that’s what matters…

Made from the pressings off their estate Riesling, barrel fermented in old French wood before being fortified with grape spirit and matured in a solera system for a number of years. As each vintage comes, a portion of Riesling from the new vintage is blended with the older barrels. Average age ends up at 3-4 years.

Candied and fresh lemon, orange rind leaning into light marmalade with Malibu style coconut and some sherry-like characters on the nose. The acidity is a treat and the fortifying spirit seems to help focus and thin the wine along an impressive line. Disturbingly easy & enjoyable to drink. Even weirder that I love the coconut finish. I tasted this with someone who wisely suggested that it would pair well with Crêpe Suzette. That is something I am definitely going to try.

And don't you know I copped some shit for owning up to the fact that I am familiar with that flavour!
