2008 The Nosey Parker Shiraz

Barossa 14.5% Screwcap $14.99 Source: Sample

The label and general aesthetic aren’t my cup of tea but I guess that’s neither here nor there. This is actually a well made wine at a really good price and I can imagine that a lot of people will enjoy it if they give it a try.

Fruit driven but not as over the top as I expected. Rich blackberries with a fair whack of curranty stuff too. Breaka coffee oak (vanilla, cream and sweetness included). Quite mouth filling but not without shape & definition via slightly broad, ripe tannins. Not that “flat” either, although I wouldn’t say acidity is a defining feature by any means. Regional aniseed/liquorice and it flirts, surprisingly, with a hint of leafiness on the finish.

It’s not overly complex nor do I suspect that it’s trying to be. There are many more cynical exercises out there, and they don’t reach this point of quality. If these flavours sound appealing I’d strongly suggest giving it some thought. It’s available at Dan Murphys, which is pretty much where it belongs. I’m not being snobby, I sometimes shop at Dan Murphys. And besides that, I can say I quite enjoyed a few glasses of this myself.
