2009 Capital Wines The Whip Riesling

Canberra 12.0% Screwcap $18 Source: Sample

If you’ve been reading much wine media lately, you’ve probably noticed Canberra is hot, hot, hot (not in terms of climate of course).  One thing that strikes me about the region and its producers is that they seem united in their attempts to get their wines noticed.  There’s a couple of other regions I know of that could learn from that…

Firstly, I’ll get the confessional side out of the way; this is only my second Riesling from our nation’s capital.  The other was from the same vintage, a Clonakilla, and I could see some similarity although this is a better wine.  Both had measured tropical accents, this pulled it off with greater subtlety.

Expressive aromatics.  Limes with light honeysuckle flower & orange blossom on the nose.  A liitle passionfruit too, but we’re not talking Sauvignon Blanc by any means.  Fuller and richer than most Edens, and many Clares. Wet slate and a hint of lemon soap too.  Not shy on an entry of tropical and citrus flavours.  Citrus dominates the palate, but the tropical fruit notes pop up generously and with good timing. A dry and long finish with a very good balance of tartness and fruit sweetness.  This is riesling though and it is pure and focused, with excellent acidity holding everything together.

It’s a little ripper and at the price I highly recommend you give it whirl.  Not so sure on cellaring, but the structure suggests that it should do 4-5 years minimum.  I really like it as is myself.
