2008 Capital Wines Kyeema Reserve Merlot

Canberra 13.1% Screwcap $46 Source: Sample

I originally had the 08 Kyeema Reserve Shiraz ahead of this on points (which I’m still not publishing, although that position is under constant review). Then I had a chance to have another glass poured from a bottle that had been open three days courtesy of Eurocentric Wine, Capital Wines’ new distributor. I’m now quite convinced the Merlot is the better wine.

Rich plum and dark berry flavours are controlled by superb, elegant structure. There’s a hint of tomato leaf, some black olivosity and a chocolate glaze. French oak is applied with precision. It really opens up with time and will cellar well. Deep pools of flavour become more & more evident with time, but the briar/thatch aspects remain to add some peasant charm to a royal drink.
