I like the long thin bottle in an aesthetic sense – it seems to suit the idea of Viognier. From a practical point of view (and perhaps an environmental one too), not so much. Then again, I don’t think you have to bother finding the right space for it in your cellar. Still yet to come across an Australian Viognier that warrants that treatment. I guess Yalumba’s Virgilius may prove me wrong at some point. Even Clonakilla seems better young to me.
This is mostly dried apricots and kernels with some peach, a hint of crushed green apple, honeysuckle and musk sticks. There’s some other stuff there too but the only other thing I want to note is that the ginger spice is essential, and it’s got plenty of that. It’s neither too fat nor too oily but it’s distinctly varietal, which should please the old guard Texturally good with no real phenolic issues.
Drinking quite well, but I think I would have preferred it on release. An admirable effort but it just misses the mark.
