2007 Hoddles Creek Pinot Noir

Yarra Valley 13.2% Screwcap $19 Source: Retail

I’m working my way through some Yarra action (in case you hadn’t guessed).  As I have neither the time nor the money to visit the region in the near future I’m bringing the wines to me.  Those of Franco D’Anna are at the top of my list.

I suspect 2007 wasn’t kind to Hoddles Creek in Pinot terms, as this is defintely not of the same quality as the excellent 2008.  The fruit is heavier. Raspberry and strawberry jam with hints of plum, ash, spice, cedar and sap.  Some stern twiggy tannins on a finish with noticeable bitterness. More power, less finesse/nuance & a touch rough.

For all that, I’m thinking about some other Pinots in the sub $20 bracket and this offers a lot more interest than, say, the De Bortoli Gulf Stations I’ve tried.  It’s more open to criticism, but I’m of a non-redemptive persepective, so I don’t think that necessarily makes me more likely to want to drink the slightly clinical but delicious De Borts.  As I keep saying; to me at least, perfection is over-rated.  Especially when it comes to wine.

What Hoddles Creek also accomplish by offering these wines at such low prices is the chance to explore a vineyard and a winemaker warts and all.  That is of great interest, and without trying to define “terroir”, it allows me to investigate it in greater detail.

Those are the pluses and the minuses.  In matters vinous I’m after interest far more than consistency.
