2006 Coldstream Hills Cabernet Sauvignon

Yarra Valley 14.0% Screwcap $29 Source: Retail

I adored the 2005 of this, and a recent post on another Yarra Cabernet Sauvignon by Chris Plummer over at Australian Wine Journal reminded me that I hadn’t got around to tasting the 06.  Unfortunately, this bottle wasn’t a great example of why I like to champion Cabernet from the region.

It was a bit discombobulated at first, but that improved with time in the decanter. As did the distracting (and unpleasant) horse meets mouse aromas and flavours, but nowhere near enough.  Underneath that was an ok wine.

Fresh black & red fruits, a fair whiff of red capsicum, soy and a little mint. Pretty damn savoury nose really. Hint of juniper too. Plummy on the palate with tomato juice on nose and in the mouth. The finish had good reach and greater cleanliness. It’s no 2005 for sure. Balanced acidity, decent tannins but the wine doesn’t roll out entirely smoothly. I found it pretty disappointing. Wouldn’t go back for more.

Jeremy, your review pretty much sums up my view of this wine. Not much chop. Odd flavour profile, and a bit disjointed. I had a bottle open for a couple of nights and it did improve, although never really came together.

    Thanks for the feedback Timothy.

It's always helpful to hear someone else has had a similar experience, even if it's not a good one. I much prefer writing up wines I can recommend.

    Cheers
