1998 Tahbilk Cabernet Sauvignon

Goulburn 13.0% Cork $38 Source: Retail

Purchased because I like the idea of retailers ordering museum stock.  It allows the general consumer a chance to try “aged” wine and it means that I can drink something with developed characters without pulling anything out my cellar.
Reminiscent of old leather lounges with a light layer of dust on the nose.  Aromas of freshly turned earth, fungi, & eucalypt too.  Underneath that lies both red and black berries, cigar leaf and brown tobacco.  There’s a nice hit of pleasant
gamey-ness.
It’s supple in the mouth, although the tannins have not fully resolved.  They gather around the edges of the mouth and in the gums.  Still some fresh fruit on the palate, but it’s predominantly savoury & secondary/tertiary.  Tomato concentrate is certainly there along with some dried blood amongst the silty and slightly muddy profile.

All in all, it’s a good, honest wine with the ageing already done for you, nothing more & nothing less.
