2006 Cardinham Estate Shiraz

Clare Valley 14.1% Screwcap $20 Source: Sample

Another more than solid wine from Cardinham.  It still manages to over-deliver for the price despite the fact that it probably ranks lower than the other reds in their stable for mine.  I should also add that I don’t drink much Clare Shiraz, preferring Cabernet from the region.

The wine builds through the palate’s line, offering dark fruit and aniseed initially before coffee, coconut and a little chocolate present.  There’s some raspberry from the mid palate onwards and a hit of sweet vanilla/mint on the finish.  Nice, unobtrusive tannins suit the wine’s profile, leaving a fair bit of fruit flavour on a good finish.

It’s a lot more than a “Wednesday wine” for sure, and it’s holding up very well at 4 years of age.  Nicely resolved and drinking well.  There are many wines of less interest than this that will set you back more.  Clearly Cardinham are doing some good things in their Estate range.
