2007 Cape Mentelle Shiraz

Margaret River 14% Screwcap $40 Source- Sample

Smells of dark cherries, plums, aniseed, menthol and dried herbs. It’s only medium bodied but there’s some serious depth here. Plenty of chocolate and meaty notes come into play nicely. The finish is of dried herbs, slightly raisined fruit and white pepper. Some mulch-like characters add further intrigue.

The tannins are excellent in this wine. Quite chewy, but in a non-disruptive kind of way. It stood up really well over three days of tasting which indicates it still has a bright future ahead of it. I’d read some of my favourite wine writers rave about this, and I can only say I’m in full agreement.

Shiraz is often overlooked when it comes to the Margaret River. On the strength of some of the recent expressions I’ve tasted, I wonder how long that’s going to last.

This has been on my list to try for a while. I'd better get onto it before it disappears. Upon trying the 08 Clockwork Shiraz and then 08 Blue Poles I have to say that my recent experiences with MR shiraz have also generally been pretty positive.

    Cant wait to try this!

It's an excellent wine at full retail, but one store has it at $30! Some steals out there at the moment…

I'll have to keep an eye out for the 08 Clockwork.

    Cheers

Went out for dinner last night and lo and behold, this was on the by the glass list. 'Bingo!' I thought. Here's the chance I've been waiting for. It seemed fated as I'd just wrote the above comment that day.
And this wine lives up to the hype. Class. All class. It ticks all the boxes from being a beautiful smelling wine to the lingering taste as I walked back home to carlton.
Those primary fruit flavours were so pristine, what will they become? I'd love to see how this wine evolves with time.

In full agreement Dave. Am cellaring a few bottles because, as good as it is, I reckon it might gain even greater depth & complexity.
