2009 Jim Barry Watervale Riesling

Clare, Watervale 12.0% Screwcap $15

James Halliday had a lot of good things to say about Jim Barry in his article in the last Weekend Australian. Said something positive about Riesling and screwcaps too. Thoroughly agree on both points actually.

This is expressive in the Watervale mode, with florals and citrus joined by a bit of apple and pear. It becomes slightly broad on the mid palate but it tightens up on the finish with good acidity. Very crunchy, nice flavours and a good price. If you are not in the mood for the more austere Eden Valley Rieslings then this would be an excellent buy. I feel like I’ve made the wine sound simple, and in a way it is. But it’s a well structured and tasty simplicity.

To be able to call this an everyday retail Riesling only hammers home the fact that the Australian wine consumer continues to live in very lucky times.
