SA Screwcap 14% $7.60- Tasted 17/7/09
How you can make a shiraz this tasty and structured for the dollars I do not know. But I will be buying more, even when my funds get back on track. I’ll tag it budget but it’s more than that!
Plums, blackberries, raspberries, vanilla, chocolate and spice all on the nose and on the palate. It’s lithe in the mouth, not at all fleshy and it’s line and length are spot on. The more you let it sit in the decanter the more savoury it gets. And the tannins build. Which is good because they balance the excellent fruit and add a fine sandy texture to the finish, which is remarkably persistent for the price. The acid seems in balance and not overdone too. Wow!
Bloody enjoyable with roast lamb, cooked with garlic and on a bed of sage, and as good a match with the viscera of roast garlic cloves squeezed over salty roast potatoes. To be frank, I was a pig in heaven that night. I’ll need to do a lot of walking and act healthy this week to recover. Yes, I was in a good mood, but I’m going to give it a 90. No shit.
