2008 Yalumba "Y Series" Sangiovese Rose

Screwcap 13% $8.55- Tasted 16-17/7/09

Sacré Bleu” as Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot might say, I’ve tasted a Rosé over two days. What was I thinking?

Anyway, the colour is pretty full on for a Sangiovese based Rosé. You’d almost guess it was a Super Tuscan Rosé! It’s a great bargain, as most Yalumba Y series are. There are cherries, raspberries, rhubarb and some confected characters all fooling around, as they should be in a fun but not really dumb Rosé. Cinnamon and a little tobacco leaf too. Plenty going on, decently dry to finish and good with a variety of foods. At times it had me thinking of apple and rhubarb pie. Maybe their was some pastry in there too, or maybe my imagination was just a little active.

It’s not as subtle or as “good” as the 2008 Pizzini “Rosetta”, which has more finesse, zip and a better finish. But then again it’s half the price. So it’s another winner from Yalumba for the price. They make a lot of wines at a lot of different price points, and I love them for pioneering Viognier, but they rarely miss the mark in any of their undertakings.

87 (I flipped a coin and it bumped it up from 86)
