If you are trawling through older reviews from the WWEI, you will find a number of methods used to rate the wines; words, scores and the odd reference to wine show medals.

I now use a tasting note and a score out of 100. The 100 point scale allows for some calibration should you wish to explore other reviewers’ opinions; and I highly suggest you do. Of course points are no more precise than tasting notes…and one person’s 90 points is not necessarily the equivalent of another’s. Life isn’t neat and neither is wine.

If I believe I’m likely to rate a wine more highly given time, a “+” sign will be added to the score.

Finally, all wines are rated/scored irrespective of price. The ‘value equation’ is left up to the reader, although I might make reference to it within a tasting note.
