2013 Shaw + Smith M3 Chardonnay

imageThe evolution of the M3 continues. Ever slimmer. Wish I could say the same of myself. Adam Wadewitz is firmly in the driver’s seat by now. Ok Wadda, not the easiest vintage to kick things off. Wadya got?

Youthful banana esters depart rapidly. Nectarine, green pear, grapefruit, hazelnuts and an odd hint of unripe passionfruit. I believe David LeMire once used the term “buttock-clenching acidity” at a lunch I attended. That’s the sort of acidity at play here. I believe it has just enough intensity of fruit to cope…but it’s on the precipice. Cedar and almond oak, nothing too overt but very spicy. Essentially a linear wine in desperate need of more time in the bottle. I struggled with it over three days. It does have spindly reach though. The Joel Embiid of wine. High risk, high return. If it stays healthy and builds a professional body then my rating may be mocked. 90+
