2009 S.C. Pannell Adelaide Hills Nebbiolo

imageStephen Pannell’s high regard for tannin must make Nebbiolo a rewarding variety to work with.

Plenty of ripeness and density here but an earthen and savoury dimension lies buried at its core. Dark, sweet brambly fruit over cherries and tar with dusty notes and wilted roses. Hints of tea leaf and aniseed. Unforced acidity. The texture of the phenolics is bang on – melting wax – although they soften quickly. Oak is barely noticeable throughout. An aftertaste of dried herbs, nuts and orange peel. 92
