2012 Yangarra Estate Mourvèdre

imageMost of Yangarra’s Mourvèdre goes into their GSM, which is wise manoeuvre as far as I’m concerned. Despite the urge of most of Australia’s wine media to make the variety the new black I still think it’s best utilised in high-grade blends. Having said that here’s a wine that makes the opposing argument well. It’s also a great example of why I prefer to taste over a number of days.

It opens up tight as a tourniquet, all sinew and muscle. Given time it puts on flesh and becomes more communicative. I’d be happy to leave it in the cellar for a good while. Aromas and flavours of stressed leather, Asian spice, plums, lavender, milk chocolate, raw steaks (not code for brett in this case) with iron filing tannin. Fresh raspberry and blueberry high notes pop up from time to time. It moves a lot in the glass which is part of its attraction. Little in the way of oak static. I’d love to see this in five or maybe even ten year’s time. 92+

DON’T LET ANTHONY MADIGAN KNOW FOR HEAVENS SAKE!

  2. He doesn’t read this site does he? :) Too many tasting notes…

  3. Too many notes about wines tasted over several days. Also, bloggers.

  4. GW says:

BLOGGERS BEING THOROUGH. IT IS UNHEARD OF AND NOT AT ALL IN THE SPIRIT OF THINGS. I WANT HASTY OPINIONS. AND I WANT THEM NOW.

Keira McIntosh is obviously a drinking without thinking sort of a thing.

  6. Philip, my comment was referring to the article Anthony Madigan wrote slamming wine writers who note the development of wine over several days in their reviews and tasting notes. Those comments can be viewed here pic.twitter.com/Z4yIUgjGmW

It’s a point of view that I disagree with absolutely.

  7. Philip White says:

Sorry Keira. I missed that spurt of idiocy. I have added a note to the offensive tweet. Madge really does depend upon the squirt vendors for his income.

  8. No harm done, in fact you’ve brought a number of new voices to the conversation about the article on Twitter. Seems not all wine drinkers are unthinkingly skolling the stuff after all.
