I reckon more than a few people consider me to be an oak Nazi and it’s true that I think it is often misused or over-applied…much like make-up. But there are circumstances where I’m happy to go into bat for a wine that, while in its youth, leaves you with a mental image of chewing on a toothpick. I prefer this to the 2011 Mr Riggs Scarce Earth Shiraz even though it’s loaded up with vanilla shake oak and aggressive with grainy tannin. The ride is actually smoother and the acidity is tamed, presenting in a more balanced fashion.
A slightly lifted balsamic character on the nose. Full-bodied with black fruits, mulberry and dark cherry. Star anise, coconut and milk chocolate with pepper and brown spice. That fruit feels fresh and lively. I don’t feel it’s been picked too late and the barrel maturation doesn’t flatten the vitality. I’d leave it alone for another five to ten years but I believe the interpretation of vintage is admirable. 93+
