The words “Yarra Valley” are printed in the largest typeface on the label but the bottom right-hand corner bears Adrian Sparks’ name as winemaker. This seems fitting as I can see Sparks’ fingerprints on the wine but first and foremost it speaks of the region in question.
It smells of nectarine, complexing sulphides, white peach and freshly baked bread. Nutty and spicy. The lees is deftly incorporated – it allows detailed expression of fruit while contributing body and mouthfeel to accompany the more angular, stony Yarra Valley acidity. The finish pulls tight and fine, centring on grapefruit pith. Hats off to both the grapes and their interpretation. Great signs for this new McWilliam’s label. 93
