2013 Pikes The Merle Riesling

pikes merlePikes have established themselves as one the stars of the classic dry Australian Riesling scene and deservedly so. The Merle is the pinnacle of their efforts and while it may take more time to make its case in comparison to the excellent ‘Traditionale’ label, with time there’s little doubt it will prove a superior wine. It’s composed of entirely Polish Hill River fruit and it has the cold stare to prove it.

Lemons - preserved and fresh – grapefruit, bath salts, jasmine and a hint of apple. Tightly wound with an excessively penetrative finish that centres on flint and wet pebbles. Clarity and purpose at all points. The acidity is deep rather than sharp. Watch it bloom in ten years time. 94+
