Previous vintages of Meerea Park’s Hell Hole Semillon have mostly been sourced from the 40 odd year-old Somerset vineyard with a couple coming out of Leonard Estate and the Braemore vineyard – all in Pokolbin. This release is also from Pokolbin but we’ve got a change in vineyard. Grapes are from the Lochleven Estate vineyard planted in the early 70′s.
The theme of the 2013 Hunter Valley Semillon vintage is continued here. Enough front-palate flavour to provide enjoyment with oysters or fine white fish right now but more than enough structure, acid and length to suggest a long-lived wine that will flourish in over a decade’s time. Citrus, lemon grass and thyme. There’s no need to overdo the descriptors. The complexity will come later. 92+
