The Empirica range from Castelli are small-batch wines made in a more experimental manner than others in the stable. “Lots of lees work and oak treatment across the range.” Intended mostly for on-premise sale.
Lifted and densely fruited. Black over red cherry with a ripple of raspberry. An edge of balsamic will attract certain drinkers and distract others. Has a thump of chubby tannin. Some earth and tobacco on the back-palate. It doesn’t really flow well. Elbows and knees with a hollowness through the middle. Big on flavour though. 87
