2013 Petaluma Hanlin Hill Clare Valley Riesling

petaluma hanlinA juicy, ripe and precocious Riesling from Petaluma full of intense lemony flavour with a sherbet edge. I wouldn’t call it delicate but it is balanced and quite ballsy for the variety in question. Has some white florals too.

A bit of melon breadth and body on the palate but enough focus all the same. Its shape comes into stark relief through the finish which exhibits conviction and endurance. Any doubts over quality are swept away. It will no doubt evolve under screwcap but I like the boisterous qualities it offers right now. 92

I tried this over 2 nights late last week. It really came into its own on the second night. I like the green apple skin, crystallized lemon and white flowers on the nose. There’s a lot of chalky character in the finish to balance all that juiciness. I bought a couple at $19.90 to cellar, for those times you want a more powerful Riesling. I’ll go to 93 points.

Now, you should try the 2013 Julius. I think that will be up your alley.

  2. I was toying with 93 :) Should taste the 2013 Julius on Wednesday.
